Johnny Five Console Boom Box

The Johnny Five is our 5th bespoke lifestyle speaker design. With two front-firing 4” full range titanium speaker drivers plus a 6.5” subwoofer on the back (all powered by 200 watts of amplification), this 70s retro-style console box can, boom! And BTW, the “Johnny Five?” Check out the inspiration for the referential joke to this perfectly serendipitous name.

The concept for the Johnny Five started with a conversation I was having with our woodworker extraordinaire, Sage Eckman of World Tree Workshop. He floated this woodworking technique to me that I immediately thought was really interesting. The idea was to start with essentially a solid block of wood that would be fabricated by face-glueing 3/4” thick boards together. This technique is beautifully highlighted in the black walnut & white birch zebra-striped styles.

Interior pockets, speaker driver bevels, etc. are then routed out of the block, sanded and hand-rubbed with a natural oil to preserve and bring out all the gorgeous wood grain. This technique also creates a stiff rigidity acoustically suited for a proper speaker cabinet. The result is a console-style boom box that sounds as good as it looks.
